The most effective air cleaning system on the market today is the Hepa filter. These are used in hospitals and doctors advise to use them over the other air cleaning systems for those suffering from severe allergies or asthma. If you intend to use them for the entire house, they will not be energy efficient. They are more suitable to work for one space like a bedroom, and you may have to get another one for your living room.

HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air Filter and the method used in these is more effective than other filtration systems in removing small particulate matter. Use can use the Hepa filters in your air cleaner or combine them with any other filtration method like an electrostatic purifier. These Hepa filters are also used in vacuum cleaners and humidifiers during dry or cold weather conditions.

How effective are Hepa Filters?

The size of the removed particle from your air defines the effectiveness of any filter and is measured in microns. The smaller the micron measure, the more particles are getting removed from air. When out buying an air filtration system, look for one that removes 99.97% of air particles measuring 0.1 microns.

A variety of particles are removed from the air with these Hepa filters. The most common allergens in any home are pet dander and dust mites and both are effectively removed with a Hepa filter. Additionally, pollen, smoke and mold spores are also removed from your living room air.

It is essential thought that your cleaning system fits into the room and that is why most are marked for the square feet covered. Before buying a Hepa filter, check the square feet you need to cover and get one for a slightly larger area.

Mostly, Hepa filters are disposable and you need to change them as often as required for effectiveness. It makes sense to follow manufacturer’s directions. Depending on the use of the Hepa filters, you will have to change them more frequently; usually it is required every 3 to 6 months.

Hepa filters in vacuum cleaners

If you use an air cleaner but continue to use a traditional vacuum cleaner, the air will not be as clean as you’d like. Dust and other particles are kicked up from your carpets during vacuuming causing more allergens in the air. This is why Hepa filters are used in vacuum cleaners too.

There could be multiple Hepa filters in the vacuum cleaner and these can be cleaned requiring replacement annually. Look for Hepa filters that capture small particles and get the right size for your vacuum.
