The beautiful vineyards of Opus on wines were founded in 1979 by both Robert Mondavi and Philippine de Rothschild. The winery located in Oakville California in the heart of Napa Valley, uses both modern and traditional techniques to establish the elegant, distinct taste. In addition the winery only uses each tank one time during each harvest allowing each batch to proceed slowly through the process. The process is never rushed and they sit in the barrel for 17-24 months before being bottled.

Opus One wine has been one of the few wines that have appreciated in value over the last 10 years. In 1998 to 2002 the 1990 batch appreciated 37%, compared to Latour 90' which only appreciated 3% over the same span. The 1990 bottle went from a average of $123 to $168 per bottle.  The Montrose 90' which appreciated 13%  only increased by $27 dollars per bottle in 1998 to 2002.
